Letter I Sent to the New York Times About the Vito and Shirley Scandals

Do you think they'll publish it?

Dear Editor,

Vito Lopez and Shirley Huntley are prime examples of the state legislature's "Incumbent Protection Plan". Their recent disgraces are all the evidence anyone needed who was not yet convinced that redistricting is a nightmare process that should have ended last year. Andrew Cuomo not only permitted the Republicans a fighting chance to keep the State Senate but he also approved by "a nudge and a wink" the degrading and corrupt behavior that has been proved in Vito's case and alleged in Shirley's. Blame Andrew for taking a pass on cleaning up Albany.

Blame Andrew for Vito and Shirley!

Vito Lopez has finally been sanctioned for his predatory behavior toward women. The state Assemblyman, and chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, has been going to and from Albany for 28 years and been groping and taking advantage of women who worked for him for just as long.

Poor Shirley Huntley, the State Senator, was caught up in a scam of her own making. Instead of demanding an end to Vito Lopez' atrocious behavior toward women, Shirley used the perks of her powerful office to create a "funding opportunity". Shirley funnelled money into a not-for-profit's front door and then waited out back for it make it's way through the building.

These two are just the latest examples of the problem that is called redistricting. You know, the issue that Andrew Cuomo swore he would struggle with and then made a deal and gave the legislature a pass? Yeah, that's the one. It isn't only a problem because the Republicans get to keep the State Senate by drawing districts that are so outrageous only a Republican would win. Every incumbent, except one or two, is declared safe in this process and that includes the likes of Vito and Shirley. That's the real problem, while the safe seats multiply the cheaters continue their cheating ways. Andrew Cuomo is as much the problem here as Vito and Shirley.

Below you'll find a link to an online petition for the Green Party candidate, Jill Stein. There is another petition to include both Gary Johnson the Libertarian candidate and Ms. Stein. It's too soon to tell if Virgil Goode and the Constitution Party will achieve ballot status in enough states. Stay tuned, and help out. It's the small "d" democratic thing to do.

The Four Major Parties and Their Platforms

Alright, here's the short version of the narratives that each of the four major parties in America's political system are projecting this year:

The Democrats want us to "Stay Put!" and "Hold the Line!" (So that's why a charismatic, youthful Obama projects such a boring complacency at times!)

The Republicans want us to "Go Back" (to the 80's when it looked like their verson of trickle down economics might work)

The Greens want us to go back even further, to the 30's and the New Deal (It needs a repaint, this New Deal, and we've got some green here! How's that?)

The Libertarians want us to go someplace we've never actually been, and it would require major social upheaval to get us to try it, hence, the "Ron Paul Revolution".

The Pledge, Updated for the 21st Century

I plead the 5th Amendment

To the ragged

Rundown state of america

And to the Republicans which can pound sand

One  nation, under the gun

Indefensible

With  a liberal tease and the jokes on

Us all.
